Everyone has an opinion about what the MM really is. The story is a modern day fish tale - getting bigger and better every day. Ditch Plains Surfers are not impressed, just annoyed that their hot spot is getting crowded with these carcasses (they claim they've run into them before). I'm still voting for the - Where the Wild Things are version aka Plum Island!!
The creature reminds me of a phenomenon that I first came across in Palm Island (a small island near Mustique). The owner of the island was a salty, colorful character who was slowly dying of blood poisoning. He told us the story of these Wild Cats that roamed the Islands - seems that at some point a cruise ship had a litter of kittens that became a nuisance and they threw them overboard. The kittens swam to a small uninhabited island and eventually mated with some of the wild bobcats. Eventually, the cross-breeds were all over the island and sometimes boats that were cruising by would see the cutest little kitten sitting on the sand, and they would scoop it up and set sail. The only problem with these "cute little cats" was that they were part bobcat, and they would attack randomly, and for some genetic reason, they were poisonous. Once again, the sailors would throw these wild cats overboard and they would swim to the next island and rein terror on that island......Eventually, one ended up on Palm Island and the owner "adopted" the cute little kitty and one night while they were hanging out enjoying the night, the cat attacked his leg and injected his poison into it. It took a while, but he eventually died (so did the cat....the man would sit in his living room with a gun aimed at the small door that the cat used to let himself in and out of the house...eventually the cat returned to the scene of the crime and when he poked his head inside, the owner pulled the trigger). After hearing that story, I ran away whenever I saw a four-legged animal on the island!!!
So maybe that story has a similar theme as our own Montauk Monster. If Plum Island isn't cross-breeding the animals, maybe somewhere out in the woods of Montauk our animals are having orgies and creating new breeds.......we could create new animal monikers (similar to the way the media insists on renaming celebrity couples): deeogs (deer/dog), griffogs (griffin/dog), foogs (fox/dog), possog (possum/dog), ottog (otter/dog)........in any event, I'll be avoiding any creatures I stumble across in the coming weeks in Montauk!
